Since 2004, Old Library Studio has brought after-school music outreach programs to Portland’s youth. The OLS has established a strong reputation with schools and alternative programs for engaging at-risk youth with music education through technology. We currently provide mobile music technology and music creation classes in four different schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods through the SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) Program. In these classes, we teach youth aged 10-14 how to create music on iPads using professional music-creation programs. Students learn about music-related topics they otherwise would not have access to such as music theory, recording, production and processing skills. Each term, students create their ‘masterpiece,’ and receive a CD of their very own music. We are proud and excited to continue working with the SUN program, however we are also continually broadening our reach and partnering with new nonprofits, after school facilities and community centers.
